Qualifications
for
Paraprofessional Positions


PARAPROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

-  High school graduate.
Must meet NCLB highly qualified requirements*.
-  Previous experience working with young children or parenting.
-  Must be flexible and sensitive to needs of exceptional children.
-  Training in crisis intervention and physical restraint, or be willing to take training.
-  Specific training at Wayne County RESA as may be required.
-  Prefer experience with augmentative communication techniques and devices.

* Michigan Paraprofessionals and NCLB  -  On January 8, 2002, President Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act, federal legislation that mandates 100 percent proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics for all students by the 2013-2014 school year.  To reach this goal, the law requires that teachers and paraprofessionals become highly qualified.

NCLB Paraprofessionals Requirements:

- Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal
   to 60 semester hours);
or
- Obtain an associate's degree (or higher); or
- Take the WorkKeys test, or take the MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher
   Certification).
