Essential question: What can archaeology tell us about the people in the distant past as well as in modern cultures of today?

Video: Buried in Your Own Backyard follows Cranbrook Institute of Science archaeologist Dr. Michael Stafford on a real archaeological dig located in central Michigan. This program challenges students to examine what they think archaeology is all about based on what they have seen in movies and popular culture, and evaluate how accurate these views really are. Students will lean about the modern science of archaeology, how it is done, how material culture is analyzed, and what archaeology can tell us about people who lived in the distant past as well as our modern cultures of today!

CD ROM : Buried in Your Own Backyard introduces students to the science of archaeology. The activities allow students to explore the tools and processes involved in archaeological discovery. Students make connections between archaeological study and the geological evolution of Michigan. Highlights include:

  • A virtual dig for artifacts
  • Visit to an actual site through virtual reality
  • An activity in which students use artifacts to recreate the skeleton of a mastodon
  • Facts about careers in archaeology
