Hidden Treasures of the Detroit Public Library
focuses on a unique collection entitled, The E. Azalia Hackley
Collection. The only one of its kind in the country, this collection
contains hidden treasures of African Americans in Performing Arts
and can only be accessed through special permission of the library.
Enjoy a chronological music journey as we look at those artists
that are considered to be "First" in crossing barriers,
opening doors or initiating a new style. The chronological development
will be brought to life through some of the treasures within the
Hackley collection. Students will be enthralled and mesmerized by
the sights and sounds of the Azalia Hackley Collection as they learn
about themselves through Social Studies and the art form of music.

ROM : The E. Azalia Hackley Collection
guides students through the steps of doing research on African Americans
in the performing arts.Students will learn about the achievements
of African Americans in the performing arts through a historical
overview of music, dance, cinema and theater during the 20th century.
The CD ROM contains two timelines that show students the correlations
between music, dance, cinema and theatre, and the effects of culture
and geography on musical styles. These timelines are the basis of
many of the other activities on the CD ROM. Highlights include:
