This volume:

  • Provides behind the scenes look at crime solving
  • Shows people and processes in crime investigation
  • Illustrates the scientific method in action
  • Presents diverse ways scientists solve problems

Essential question: What are the diverse ways people use the scientific method to solve everyday problems?

Video: Methods and Mysteries of Science introduces students to a "behind the scenes" look at the people, processes and steps involved in solving a crime in the forensic science field. The program emphasizes the importance of the scientific method and how professionals use it daily on the job. Students become familiar with the process of the scientific method, as it relates to and emphasizes hypothesis testing. It is important to note that there is no single scientific method. Rather, real scientists use a variety of methods. Close inspection during this program reveals that all scientists approach and solve problems with imagination, creativity, prior knowledge and perseverance.

The lesson plans that have been developed your classroom will have students constructing and reflecting on their scientific knowledge prior to and after the show. The lesson plans have identified the key steps to the scientific method and it's applications to the real world, as it relates to elementary and middle school curriculum.

CD ROM : Methods and Mysteries of Science introduces students to the tools, processes and steps involved in solving “scientific mysteries” in the forensic science field. Students solve a simulated mystery using some of the same techniques explored in the video. The scientific method is highlighted with an emphasis on hypothesis testing and how it is used in everything that we do on a daily basis. The fact that scientists use not a single scientific method but rather a variety of methods is emphasized. Highlights include:

  • Interactive library
  • Careers in forensic science
  • Scientific method
  • Detroit Science Center tour
  • Web Quest
