Essential question: How do you create an opera?

Video: Behind the Scenes at the Opera House: Nanabush features the Detroit Opera House, the permanent site for the Michigan Opera Theatre.  M.O.T. produces a season of opera and dance and other programs that tour with the opera company’s Department of Community Programs.  Students will visit the innermost areas of the Opera House.  During this video, they will meet several of the behind the scenes people who are responsible as members of the team to bring an opera from the beginning stages to finish.  They will also view a performance of the opera Nanabush, which is an operatic presentation of stories from the Native American Indians that have been passed down through centuries. Students will learn about this fascinating art form and experience first hand The Making of an Opera.

CD ROM : Behind the Scenes of an Opera introduces students to the world of opera by exploring Detroit's own Michigan Opera Theatre.  Students tour the Detroit Opera House and see its renovation. The introduction includes fun interactivities including, identifying singing voices and learning about some of the most famous operas, their composers and story lines. Students also learn opera teminology and view an excerpt from the opera Nanabush. Highlights include:

  • Virtual tour of the Detroit Opera House
  • Careers in opera
  • Interactive anatomy of the vocal system
  • Matching game of voice categories to singing voices
